Stroke is a killer and persons that are overweight are at increased
risk of suffering a stroke. The more overweight a person is, the
greater the likelihood they will experience a cerebrovascular event. A
person should find adequate motivation to reduce excess body fat with
this information. If he does not, it can only be due to the fact he is
unaware of the risks associated with stroke. Statistics show that
stroke is the number one cause of adult disability in Europe and the
United States.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. There are
two categories of stroke, ischemic and hemorrhagic. When a blockage
large enough to block blood flow to the brain occurs, it is known as an
ischemic stroke. A blockage may occur for several reasons.
Arterial
walls can have a thrombus, or blood clot, form on them. This type of
stroke is called cerebral thrombosis. Blood clots can also form and
travel through the bloodstream. A freely traveling blood clot is called
an embolus. An embolus can completely obsrtuct cerebral arteries
causing a type of stroke known as a cerebral embolism. Many ischemic
strokes, 30%-40%, do not have an obvious cause and are referred to as
cryptogenic.
Stroke can also occur when a diseased artery in the brain suddenly
ruptures and floods the surrounding brain tissue with blood. This
category of stroke is known as hemorrhagic
stroke. This type of stroke injures
the brain in two ways. First the hemorrhage causes a lack of blood flow
to the area of the brain that is targeted by that particular artery.
Secondly, the adjacent brain cells are impacted by the pressure created
when blood escapes its arterial confines. Persons suffering from
hypertension (high blood pressure) and atherosclerosis (arterial plaque
accumulation) are the most likely to experience a hemorrhagic stroke.
These two disorders are two of the most common experienced by persons
that have excess body fat. Brain injury, or the bursting of an
aneurysm, may also cause a hemorrhagic stroke. Blood filled pouches
that form in weak spots of the arterial wall are known as aneurysms.
Transient ischemic
attacks are known as mini strokes. The damage caused
by transient ischemic
attacks
is minimal, however the probability of a more severe stroke in
the near future is indicated by the occurrence of transient ischemic
attacks. In fact, 1/3
of all people that suffer from transient ischemic
attacks will have a stroke in the next
five years if they do not seek treatment.transient ischemic
attacks come in two main
categories. A blurring, blackout or whiteout of the vision of one eye
is known as transient monocular blindness. Transient monocular
blindness has been described as the sense of a shade being pulled over
the sight of one eye. Transient hemispheral attack is the name of the
other type of transient
ischemic
attack. A transient hemispheral attack is signified by a
sudden weakness or numbness of the side of the face, one arm or leg or
difficulty in speaking or comprehension.
Brain cells can be saved following a thrombotic stroke using
thrombolytic drugs or medications called heparinoids. When administered
within 90 minutes of the occurrence of stroke dimethyl sulfoxide,
or
DMSO,
can entirely reverse the affects of thrombolytic stroke.
Unfortunately, DMSO
is not approved for any medical use in humans by
the FDA, which prevents the use of DMSO
as a life saver in the United
States. Nevertheless, it is a wise idea to know the warning signs of
stroke so treatment can be applied quickly. It is a documented fact
that the majority of people do not seek help for a stroke for 24 hours
or longer, well after the time that the affects of the stroke can be
counteracted.
The early detection of stroke can be facilitated by the acronym FAST,
which stands for face arm and speech test. Sudden loss of strength,
movement or numbness in the face, arm, or leg is a sign of possible
stroke. Loss of speech or trouble understanding speech can also be a
symptom of stroke. Other symptoms of possible stroke are dimness of
vision, loss of vision or double vision in one eye. Another easy to
perform test that accurately denotes a person is suffering from a
stroke can be applied by asking a person to stick out their tongue. If
the tongue comes out crooked, or goes to one side or the other, that
person is most likely having a stroke. A person that is unable to
respond is having some sort of medical emergency, possibly a stroke. A
single symptom or combination of symptoms should be taken seriously. A
person that displays such symptoms should taken to the hospital without
delay.
There are several risk factors for stroke that a person should be aware
of. Anyone that suffers from transient ischemic
attacks is at the highest risk of suffering
rom a stroke. Women have a lesser chance of experiencing a stroke than
men do. Despite this, women do have dramatic hormone changes that put
them at heightened risk of cerebrovascular event. Women see their
greatest risk for risk during pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.
Another issue in determining stroke risk is a person‘s race. Blacks and
Hispanics are at much higher risk of stroke than are whites. A person‘s
risk for stroke doubles with every decade past 55. Hypertension, also
known as high blood pressure, dramatically increases a person’s chance
of suffering from a stroke. Increased levels of low density
lipoprotein, or LDL, enhance the risk of stroke. The risk of stroke is
heightened with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can usually be
eliminated with a satisfactory reduction in excess body fat.
There are many treatments for stroke, despite this, they fall outside
the scope of this article. Not to mention, the best therapy for any
illness or affliction is to avoid it in the first place. Helping a
person to avoid stroke and imparting the information to help a person
quickly identify when a stroke is occurring so as to be able to quickly
get the medical attention required is the scope of this article. After
seeking help from a medical professional, said professional will
discuss therapy options with a patient.
