Stroke Likelihood Enhanced By Excess Body Fat

----------
Persons that are overweight are at heightened risk of stroke. The more overweight a person is, the greater the likelihood they will experience a cerebrovascular event. This knowledge should provide adequate motivation for a person to reduce their excess body fat. If he does not, it can only be due to the fact he is unaware of the risks associated with stroke. The top cause of adult disability in the United States and Europe is stroke.

Stroke is classified as a lack of blood supply to the brain. There are two major classifications of stroke, ischemic and hemorrhagic. When a blockage large enough to block blood flow to the brain occurs, it is known as an ischemic stroke. A blockage may occur for several reasons. Arterial walls can have a thrombus, or blood clot, form on them. When stroke happens due to such an instance it is known as a cerebral thrombosis. Blood clots can also freely travel about the blood system. A free floating blood clot is known as an embolus. Cerebral arteries can be entirely blocked by such an embolus causing a stroke known as cerebral embolism. 30%-40% of all ischemic strokes have no obvious explanation and are termed cryptogenic.

Stroke can also occur when a diseased artery in the brain suddenly ruptures and floods the surrounding brain tissue with blood. This type of stroke is called hemorrhagic. This type of stroke damages the brain in two ways. First the hemorrhage causes a lack of blood flow to the area of the brain that is targeted by that particular artery. Also, the pressure caused by blood escaping into the brain itself is injurious to the brain. Hemorrhagic stroke is most likely to occur in persons that suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) and atherosclerosis (arterial plaque accumulation). Of the ailments suffered by persons that are overweight, these are two of the most common. Hemorrhage may also occur due to brain injury or the bursting of an aneurysm. Blood filled pouches that form in weak spots of the arterial wall are known as aneurysms.

A transient ischemic attack is what may best be described as a mini stroke. TIA’s generally cause minimal damage; however they serve as warning sign of the probability of a more severe stroke in the near future. In fact, 1/3 of all people that suffer from TIA‘s will have a stroke in the next five years if they do not seek treatment. There are two main types of TIA. Transient monocular blindness is a blurring or a blackout or whiteout of the vision in one eye. Transient monocular blindness has been described as the sense of a shade being pulled over the sight of one eye. The other type of TIA is known as a transient hemispheral attack. In a transient hemispheral attack a reduced flow of blood to the brain causes sudden weakness or numbness of one arm, leg, or side of the face, or difficulty in speaking or thinking.

Subsequent to a person experiencing a stroke, brain cells can be saved by thrombolytic drugs or medications called heparinoids. When administered within 90 minutes of the occurrence of stroke dimethyl sulfoxide, or DMSO, can entirely reverse the affects of thrombolytic stroke. Due to the fact that DMSO is not approved by the FDA for medical use in humans, it cannot be used as a life saver in the United States. Nevertheless, it is a wise idea to know the warning signs of stroke so treatment can be applied quickly. It is a documented fact that the majority of people do not seek help for a stroke for 24 hours or longer, well after the time that the affects of the stroke can be counteracted.

The face, arm and speech test, called FAST, can assist in the early detection of stroke. Sudden loss of strength, movement or numbness in the face, arm, or leg is a sign of possible stroke. Loss of speech or trouble understanding speech can also be a symptom of stroke. Dimness, loss of vision or double vision in one eye are also telltale signs of a stroke. Another easy to perform test that accurately denotes a person is suffering from a stroke can be applied by asking a person to stick out their tongue. If the tongue comes out crooked, or goes to one side or the other, that person is most likely having a stroke. Again, if they cannot comprehend the instruction, they may be suffering from a stroke. A single symptom or combination of symptoms should be taken seriously. The person displaying such symptoms should be taken to the hospital immediately.

A person should make themselves aware of the multiple symptoms of stroke. Anyone that suffers from TIA‘s is at the highest risk of suffering rom a stroke. Women have a lesser chance of experiencing a stroke than men do. However, women experience drastic hormonal changes that put them at increased risk during those times. Pregnancy, childbirth and menopause are times that mark increased risk for stroke in women. A person‘s race is a factor in determining stroke risk. Blacks and Hispanics are at much higher risk of stroke than are whites. With every decade following the age of 55, a person’s risk of stroke doubles. A person that suffers from hypertension, or high blood pressure, has significantly increased chance of suffering a stroke. Increased levels of low density lipoprotein, or LDL, enhance the risk of stroke. The risk of stroke is heightened with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can usually be eliminated with a satisfactory reduction in excess body fat.

There are many treatments for stroke, however, they fall outside the scope of this article. Not to mention, the best remedy for any illness or affliction is to avoid it in the first place. Helping a person to avoid stroke and imparting the information to help a person quickly identify when a stroke is occurring so as to be able to quickly get the medical attention necessary is the scope of this article. After seeking help from a medical professional, said professional will discuss therapy options with a patient.
