The increased load on the heart from excess body fat intensifies a
person‘s risk of being afflicted by a stroke. The greater the amount of
excess body fat a person has, the greater the risks of stroke become.
This should provide a person sufficient motivation to reduce excess
body fat. It can only be due to the fact they are not aware of the
hazards involved with a stroke if they are not motivated by this
information. The top cause of adult disability in the United States and
Europe is stroke.
A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted. Ischemic
and hemorrhagic are the two main types of stroke. An ischemic stroke
occurs when a blockage occurs to disrupt blood flow to the brain. Clots
may form for a variety of reasons. A thrombus, or blood clot, can form
on arterial walls. When stroke happens due to such an instance it is
known as a cerebral thrombosis. Blood clots can also form and travel
through the bloodstream. A freely traveling blood clot is called an
embolus. Cerebral arteries can be entirely blocked by such an embolus
causing a stroke known as cerebral embolism. Many ischemic strokes,
30%-40%, do not have an obvious cause and are referred to as
cryptogenic.
Stroke can also occur when a diseased artery in the brain suddenly
ruptures and floods the surrounding brain tissue with blood. This type
of stroke is called hemorrhagic. This type of stroke damages the brain
in two ways. First the hemorrhage causes a lack of blood flow to the
area of the brain that is targeted by that particular artery. Also, the
pressure caused by blood escaping into the brain itself is injurious to
the brain. Hemorrhagic stroke is most likely to occur in persons that
suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure) and atherosclerosis
(arterial plaque accumulation). Of the ailments suffered by persons
that are overweight, these are two of the most common. Hemorrhage may
also occur due to brain injury or the bursting of an aneurysm.
Aneurysms are blood filled pouches that form in weak places of the
arterial walls.
A transient ischemic attack is what may best be described as a mini
stroke. transient ischemic attack’s generally cause nominal damage;
however they serve as
warning sign of the probability of a more severe stroke in the near
future. In fact, 1/3 of all people that suffer from transient ischemic
attack‘s will have a
stroke in the next five years if they do not seek treatment. There are
two main categories of transient ischemic attack. A blurring, blackout
or whiteout of the
vision of one eye is called transient monocular blindness. Transient
monocular blindness has been described as the sense of a shade being
pulled over the sight of one eye. Transient hemispheral attack is the
name of the other type of transient ischemic attack. In a transient
hemispheral attack a
reduced flow of blood to the brain causes sudden weakness or numbness
of one arm, leg, or side of the face, or difficulty in speaking or
thinking.
Subsequent to a person experiencing a stroke, brain cells can be saved
by thrombolytic drugs or medications called heparinoids. Also, dimethyl
sulfoxide, or DMSO, has been shown to totally reverse the effects of
stroke when administered within 90 minutes of the stroke. Due to the
fact that DMSO is not approved by the FDA for medical use in humans, it
cannot be used as a life saver in the United States. Despite this, a
person is well advised to know the warning signs of stroke so stroke
can be identified and treated quickly. Most people do not seek help for
a stroke for 24 hours or longer, well after the time when the affects
of the stroke can be counteracted.
The face, arm and speech test, called FAST, can assist in the early
detection of stroke. Sudden loss of strength, movement or numbness in
the face, arm, or leg is a sign of possible stroke. Another symptom of
stroke is the loss of speech or the ability to understand speech. Other
symptoms of possible stroke are dimness of vision, loss of vision or
double vision in one eye. Another easy to perform test that accurately
denotes a person is suffering from a stroke can be applied by asking a
person to stick out their tongue. Providing the person is able to
respond, if they stick their tongue out and it goes to one side or the
other or comes out crooked, the person is most likely suffering from a
stroke. A person that is unable to respond is having some sort of
medical emergency, possibly a stroke. Any of these symptoms or
combination of symptoms should be taken seriously. A person that
displays such symptoms should taken to the hospital without delay.
A person should make themselves aware of the multiple symptoms of
stroke. Anyone that suffers from transient ischemic attack‘s is at the
highest risk of
suffering rom a stroke. Men are at increased risk of stroke as compared
to women. However, women experience drastic hormonal changes that put
them at increased risk during those times. Pregnancy, childbirth and
menopause are the times when women show their greatest risk of stroke.
Race plays a major role in the risk of stroke. Whites have a much
lesser risk of stroke than do blacks or Hispanics. With every decade
following the age of 55, a person’s risk of stroke doubles. A person
that suffers from hypertension, or high blood pressure, has
significantly increased chance of suffering a stroke. High levels of
low density lipoprotein, or LDL, boost the risk of stroke. The risk of
stroke is heightened with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes can usually
be eliminated with a satisfactory reduction in excess body fat.
There are many treatments for stroke, however, they fall outside the
scope of this article. Beside that, the best remedy for any illness or
affliction is to avoid it in the first place. Helping a person to avoid
stroke and imparting the information to help a person quickly identify
when a stroke is occurring so as to be able to quickly get the medical
attention needed is the scope of this article. After seeking help from
a medical professional, said professional will discuss therapy options
with a patient.
