Apply these values to the BMI equation, Divide 54.48 by 2.896 and the result is 18.81.

The following table will help make sense of an otherwise meaningless number.

18.5 and under- underweight
18.51-24.99- Normal
25-29.99-Overweight
30-34.99- Obese Class 1
35-39.99- Obese Class 2
40 and over- Extremely obese

The guidelines provided by the BMI will assist the dieter in choosing the appropriate plan for their needs. Those in the higher ranges should consider the health risks linked to a high BMI. A waist circumference greater than 36 inches for men indicates an increased risk for Type II diabetes. A waist circumference greater than 31 inches for women indicates an increased risk of Type II diabetes.

BMI can be a helpful gauge in the determination of the state of one’s health. With the help of BMI and other tools, the proper diet and exercise plan can easily be defined for anyone.
