Parrot facts: Feather plucking is related to pet parrot stress.  Feather plucking is a displacement behavior.  Unfortunately, once the pet parrot stress has been relieved, the habit may have already taken hold.  The feather plucking exhibited through pet parrot stress is often an attempt to rid themselves of damaged feathers.  This displacement behavior is seen in caged birds and not birds in the wild.

Feather plucking (displacement behavior) is often caused by environmental exposure; i.e. new living conditions in cages instead of the wild.  Captive born birds also display feather plucking (displacement behavior).  The pet parrot stress is still caused by environmental exposure.  Caged birds are exposed to household chemicals; fumes, such as those created by chlorine bleach cause pet parrot stress which causes feather plucking or other forms of displacement behavior.  

Parrot facts: Chlorine bleach fumes, and other household chemicals including but not limited to: spray furniture polish, air fresheners or any chemical that may float in the air, create  hazardous  conditions and may lead to pet parrot stress and even death.  Exposure to chlorine bleach may result in alimentory, dermal and ocular irritation or ulceration as well as significant respiratory irritation.  Respiratory irritation is often fatal to avian lungs.

The relative hazardous conditions created by chlorine bleach products depends on the concentration of sodium hypochlorite.  Due to the anatomy and physiology  of the avian lung,  caged birds are at increased risk of succumbing to fumes from chlorine bleach and other household cleaning agents.  Coughing, gagging and sneezing are signs  of  respiratory irritation.
