The dog was bred of selective desires. Certain characteristics bred
into a dog to build a stronger fighting dog. Creating a class of their
own; leaving the world around them to discover who they are. Most
American Pit Bull Terrier owners agree their dogs are different from
other dogs and link this to the APBT’s intelligence; an intelligence
that cannot be quieted. This often leaves the APBT misunderstood due to
its actions and a human’s inability to fathom the depth of intelligence
the APBT often displays. Line breeding has kept some bloodlines pure
and they often carry with them the .44 caliber attitude. True
bloodlines with easily traceable lineage have survived and are alive
and well. Fighting is a thing of the past; however the spirit lives on.
The APBT has an integral desire from racing hormones and happy
emotional ego that still thrives among many APBT’s. These are high
energy dogs whose emotions often become a monster of a terrier. This
can often be attributed to the owner’s irresponsibility in the form of
a lack of training or training the animal to be an attack dog. Many
Americans are seeking a dog for protection, yet are often unaware of
what the combination of strong protector and high energy dog amounts to
be. The APBT is an excellent choice for protection and is a very high
energy dog. Such a dog needs a high energy owner as well. This requires
more than just walking an APBT; it also includes being active with your
dog and being communicative with your dog; i.e., talk to your APBT
often, especially during play time. APBT’s are command dogs whose only
desire is to please their human companions. Training an APBT is not the
same as training other breeds. Discipline will sometimes require
commanding the dog to lie down and putting their head down. Actually
holding the dog’s head down to let them know you are in charge, or
alpha in the instinct world of a dog. After a while, the owner will no
longer need to hold the dog’s head down; only tell the dog to put its
head down. Simply crating a dog or locking it in a room will not
surpress the anxiety in the dog. However, putting a dog’s head down
firmly releases all tension in the dog and establishes the human is in
charge. Dogs do this among themselves naturally in order to establish
pack dominance. The bigger, stronger dog will rule the others. The
owner will easily be able to subdue their dog in this manner, if
implemented from beginning.
