Is Drinking Soda Dangerous

It has been the realization of many people that at the very least soda is fattening. Despite this awareness, close to 50 billion liters of soda are consumed in the United States each year. That is nearly 216 liters per person! Now, science has provided definitive proof of the danger of drinking excessive amounts of soda.

When you drink soda your blood sugar rises dramatically. The increased blood sugar levels cause your pancreas to manufacture insulin. Your liver responds to the insulin by turning the sugar into fat, unless it is immediately needed for energy. After an hour, you will have a blood sugar crash and may be tempted to get another soda and start the process again.

Soda is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. Your liver processes fructose. A significant difference between fructose and other sugars is that fructose is mainly transformed to fat. It has been estimated that drinking two bottles of soda each day can lead to the accumulation of one pound of fat each week!

When fructose is metabolized by your liver a considerable amount of toxins are created. Among these toxins is uric acid which causes high blood pressure and gout.

Contents of soda:

Approximately 150 calories that are have no nutritional value other than energy. Most of these calories will become fat.

The federal government has established a limit of 5 parts per billion of benzene in drinking water. Researchers have determined that some soft drinks have a benzene level as high as 79 parts per billion.

Phosphoric acid is also found in soda. Phosphoric acid may impede your body’s ability to absorb calcium. This may lead to osteoporosis.

Many brands of soda contain caffeine. Caffeine may cause you to feel jittery, insomnia, cause high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, birth defects, breast lumps, vitamin and mineral deficiency and possibly some forms of cancer.

Diet sodas use aspartame for sweetness. Aspartame consumption is associated with numerous health issues including: epileptic seizure, emotional disorder, brain tumors, birth defects and diabetes.

Many sodas contain artificial colors. Among these is caramel coloring which has been identified as being carcinogenic. Furthermore, in laboratory experiments scientists discovered caramel coloring interferes with leukocyte action. This means that caramel coloring inhibits the immune system.

Sulfites are found in many sodas. If you are sensitive to sulfites they can cause headaches, rashes and breathing problems.

A preservative that is common to many sodas is sodium benzoate. Sodium benzoate may cause DNA damage which may possibly lead to cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease.

To greatly improve your health, you should quit drinking soda. Water is a much better choice, however, you should filter your tap water or buy bottled water. If you cannot live without carbonated beverages, you should drink sparkling mineral water with lime or lemon juice. Many health benefits can be found with the consumption of green tea.

Cutting soda from your diet will greatly improve your health. You may get clearer skin and lose weight and prevent a number of disorders from occurring as was previously mentioned in this post. Good health to you!
