Dimethylsulfoxide is a compound that was in first synthesized in 1866
by Russian scientist Alexander Zaytsev. The first use of DMSO in
medicine did not come until 1963; by a University of Oregon medical
research team, headed by Stanley W. Jacob, MD. Jacob’s team found that
dimethylsulfoxide deeply penetrates the skin without damage and can
safely deliver other therapeutic substances. Arguably the most controversial therapeutic advance of modern times, the dispute over the uses of DMSO is more bureaucratic than scientific.
